Britain and America have signed a landmark trade agreement that will maintain no levies on British pharmaceutical products going into the American market.

The Terms of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to raise spending on drugs through the National Health Service (NHS). This move ensures that tariffs on these vital exports will be held at zero for a timeframe of three years.

This agreement comes after previous warnings to hike import taxes on branded pharmaceutical products, with figures discussed up to 100%.

"This arrangement between the United Kingdom strengthens the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and brings much-needed fairness to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a release noted.

Commercial Impact

Medicines are one of the UK's most significant goods shipped to the United States, which is easily the primary market for major UK drugmakers.

Trade data indicate that in the one-year period to the end of last September, the UK sold medicines valued at £11.1bn to the US. This figure accounted for nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that span.

"This guarantee secures employment, boosts capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a global hub for medical research," a minister stated.

Key British Pledges

The pact involves several key pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it judges new medicines to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to double overall health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The amount pharmaceutical firms must pay back to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at fifteen percent. Last year, rebates were more than 20%.

Industry Background

The deal comes amid a ongoing row between the drug companies and the British authorities over medicine costs and NHS adoption.

This friction were heightened by arguments that American consumers were charged significantly more for the identical medicines than patients in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been pledged toward American operations.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS had to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its total funding over the last ten years.
