European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
