Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
